Bunnies On the Go Lesson
by Kristin Pugliese
In Phase 1 we practice our long and short sounds. In this lesson, we use a book to bring the concept of long and short to the real world! See how far your students can take it!
Objective
v Students will practice long sounds and short sounds.
v Students will practice tracing their Note Knacks
MATERIALS
- Children's Book: Bunnies on the Go: Getting from Place to Place by Rick Walton
- Several sets of Note Knacks
Methods
- The Bunnies go on vacation but must take 12 means of transportation to get there.
- Write the different means of transportation that the Bunnies must take on the board.
- Decide on a sound to make for each, either by body or instrument.
- Have the students decide if the Bunnies are taking a long trip or a short one with each mode using a chosen Note Knack.
- Have the children trace the chosen Note Knack next to the vehicle.
- Now read the book, but after you say each vehicle, have the students drag their finger across the chosen Note Knack or rhythm card while saying the chosen sound for that mode of transportation.
- At the end you can line up all of the Note Knacks out on the rug and see if the children can remember the sequence of the vehicles.
Assessment
ü Did the student trace the block properly?
ü Does the student drag their finger across the Note Knack and make a sound for that period of time?
EXTRA POSSIBILITIES
Ø This is a good way to incorporate Language Arts standards into the music room.
Ø Have the children arrange the Note Knacks “roads” in a way that looks like streets and create a whole neighborhood around it.
Content standards
- 3: Improvising melodies, variations and accompaniments
